Pain is a sensory and often emotional experience as a result of damage to a part or parts of the body. The experience of pain differs from one person to the next and a low tolerance to pain does not make you a week person compared to someone with who feels less pain. The science of pain relief is called pain management and an area of medicine that is growing in importance especially with the number of complaints that leave a person in continual distress.
While some pain experienced can be eliminated by medication, under the guidance of trained physicians, other types prove to be difficult and standard medication does not always work. The situation with acute pain for example is one where once the underlying problem has been successfully treated, the pain will normally be easy to relieve. A harder type of pain to manage is chronic pain as it can be difficult to locate or diagnose but common reasons are nerve damage, referred pain and cancer.
In such conditions, the pain management is dealt with separately and is considered to be a symptom of the disease itself. The nature of pain often means that it could fall under different areas than those being treated so it has been viewed, correctly, that the whole area should use a multidisciplinary approach, which may include the use of drugs or physical treatments for example.
Pain relief can also involve psychological measures that involve biofeedback, cognitive therapy or the use of meditation and relaxation through yoga. Some pain that is suffered by patients is the result of a trauma that has been treated although the pain remains which is an extremely frustrating situation for the person and one where the condition is treated independently from the original cause.
A number of medical disciplines have been brought together within the pain management field including psychiatrists, anesthesiologists plus others that specialize in the field of pain. Certain members are highly proficient in the means of using drugs to combat pain. Within this structure are other medical specialists who will try a combination of interventional methods to help patients suffering with pain.
Pain relief methods using pain management teams is a growing area of medicine and closely watched around the world. Pain management is found to be the central focus in the treatment of diseases, like cancer, tumors, serious accidents and long term illnesses. However, pain relief is something that has to be taught individually to the patients concerned.
