Anxiety can be hard to understand as people who have anxiety attacks often withdraw into themselves and pull away from their friends and family. This withdrawal from social activities and interactions can make it hard for others to get a understanding of anxiety.
Most of us have learned over the years how to deal with stressful situations that we may come up against , we may get annoyed and we may feel frustrated. This is normal, however people who suffer with anxiety feel the same emotions that all of us do but they tend to feel them far more intensely and for extensive periods of time .
Anxiety is a wide reaching term that covers many levels of the illness and different triggers. Some people will find a specific item or situation will trigger a anxiety attack some people will find that they go into a downard spiral of anxiety where they withdraw further away from people and become more and more anxious as time goes on.
If you are sitting in a group of 100 people it would be a fair estimate that 5 of them would have Generalized Anxiety Disorder, this basically means they are constantly worrying and in a anxious state of mind. I am sure you can appreciate how the constant worry and feelings of stress affect peoples physical as well as mental wellbeing.
The biggest problem that one faces if a person is diagnosed with this form of anxiety disorder is that they often have other medical problems which compound the situation. In well over half the people in the USA who suffer from anxiety, they suffer from other forms of this disorder or depression as well.
There are some symptoms that many people who suffer from Generalized Anxiety Disorder will display, including Being constantly edgy and restless. Have trouble sleeping, which contributes to the irritability that also seems common amongst GAD sufferers Never wishing to stand out, at work, in their social life or anywhere that there is a crowd of people.
Working for a living usually brings its own pressures, targets and deadlines to meet , meetings to go to and sometimes work colleagues that are not that pleasant. Most of us don’t let these problems bother us long term, if you have a anxiety disorder you won’t be able to help but let them take over your mind and build up and up until you can’t face work anymore.
Although it may seem impossible there is help available for all of the anxiety disorders. The difficult step for most people is getting the friend or family member to admit they need help and go to see their Dr. When they do admit they have a problem and go to see their Dr he will most likely start them on a course of medication. Medication is not a instant fix for anxiety, understanding and support for the anxiety sufferer will be as valuable as any medication that can be prescribed.
When you go to see your Dr you must be open minded as to what treatment he offers you, medication is not the only way that he may be able to help you. Having a open mind to listen and discuss the various treatment options will help you in the healing process.
