When shopping for a dedicated server for your web hosting needs, there are a few things to watch out for. First thing to consider is if you really need it. Second is if you have the technical ability, and third is the quality of the web hosting company.

There are several types of web hosting accounts: shared, virtual private, and dedicated, each in increasing price and reliability. For a simple “brochure” site, shared hosting is fine. For most typical websites that expect a large amount of traffic, virtual private is perfectly adequate. Dedicated web hosting should be considered only if you are going to be having the largest amount of visitors and files being download, such as videos and images. If you don’t really need this, then go with one of the lesser types of hosting.

Secondly, many web hosts may only had over the keys to a dedicated server, leaving the installation and configuration of Apache, PHP, etc up to you. Do you have Linux command line ability? Can you install and configure all these programs yourself, or do you have somebody who can?

Third, do your due diligence in reviewing the dedicated host first. Will they help you with technical problems if your site is down? Will they server your needs quickly and efficiently? Do a deep web search for comments about the host before signing up.

A dedicated web hosting provider may be what you need, but if you skip the above steps, you may find yourself out in the cold at the time when you need your site the most.
