Panic attack – what is this exactly, and why does it happen? Most of all, how can we overcome it?
Panic Attack: What is It?
Panic attack happens when the brain sends out threat signals to our body although there is no such threat. It is a psychological condition that can be triggered by nothing in particular. The body will react with fear in response to the threat signals and various manifestations of fear becomes apparent. Especially when the panic attack is severe, you will definitely need help coping with it.
What are the Symptoms of Panic Attack?
Shortness of breath, heart palpitations, shaking or trembling and nausea are some of the signs and symptoms of panic attacks. Other times, a person will feel chest pains and feels like he is trapped and can’t break free.
If you noticed, most of the symptoms I’ve mentioned are serious. This can be mistaken for a heart attack or even a mild stroke. That’s why, never disregard symptoms like these. Seek medical attention right away for it might not be a panic attack anymore.
What Can Cause It?
What are the triggers of panic attack? Unbelievably, it can be genetic or hereditary. Others can be the result of a medical condition. It can even be caused by the medications and drugs that you are prescribed with. Pregnancy in women can also cause panic attacks. And yes, stress, known as the silent killer, is the most common cause of panic attacks.
What Should You Avoid?
Avoid taking too much or totally ignore drinks with caffeine. Drinks like coffee and tea, even soda, can worsen a panic attack. Avoid drinking alcohol as much as possible and avoid smoking, too. It can give you breathing and blood pressure problems which can trigger and cause a panic attack to happen frequently. Avoiding those mentioned can help in overcoming panic attacks.
Is There a Way to Overcome It?
Yes there is. First is assurance. When you go to your doctor and you pass all your lab tests, then you can assure yourself that there’s nothing wrong with your organs like the heart, lungs, brain and your entire body.
Never let your mind dwell on the thoughts of a panic attack as it will most likely occur. Whenever you feel an oncoming panic attack, settle yourself down, relax and remain calm. Assess your situation logically and condition your brain that there is no actual threat or danger to be frightened of.
When your panic attacks worsen, or before it does, seek professional help. Further, it is best if you have someone nearby at all times to help you deal calmly when panic attacks occur.
