The basic aim of a retail store is to create an atmosphere that facilitates the retailer in advertising and selling good and allows the customers select and buy the items with ease. That is the reason why retail design, which is the design of retail outlets and spaces, deals with not only the standard aspects of architecture and interior design, but also elements of ergonomics, promotion, and graphic design.

It is essential for a retail space to be designed taking into consideration the particular needs it is meant to cater to. Art emporiums and supermarkets serve as good examples of retail spaces that have entirely different needs for their design. When the design is developed, a number of factors have to be taken note of, like the type of items on sale, the role played by the sale persons in the sale of the items and the amount of the items that have to be put on display. Sometimes it is also essential for customers to be able to test the goods, while some other retail spaces may only need displaying the goods. Therefore, the retail design varies based on specific requirements.

Apart from the utilitarian features of retail design, the attractiveness of the retail space to the customer is also extremely significant. It is important that the environment of the retail store looks friendly to the buyers so that they are motivated to purchase the goods. The retail design plays a major role in this. The store should also have ad displays inside the shop that encourages the customers to buy the items exhibited in the store.

Moreover, the retail store must impress the customers to such an extent that they are compelled to visit the store in future for more shopping. Thus, an expert retail designer will always give adequate attention to the ambience of the shop that would guarantee that the customers have a nice and pleasant time in the store.

In order to create an effective retail design, it is essential to have an adequate functional knowledge of customer psychology, space planning, promotion etc. These factors should be understood both by the owner of the retail space, so that the precise requirements can be communicated in an efficient manner, and by the retail designers, so that the design effectively meets those needs.

Designing the store interior well is extremely important, but there is one other thing that should be kept in mind. The exteriors of the shop are equally important and should be attractive so that the buyers are tempted to come in and look at the merchandise.
