I grew up as part of a large family. We were all very close and on Sundays we would all meet at my grandparents house. It was a traditional home with wonderful wooden furniture. There were many stately pieces of furniture. But the Grandfather Clock they strategically placed in the corner of the Family room was the most impressive.
My family used to gather around the family room and have long discussions about current events and family issues. The Grandfather Clock would chime faithfully every hour on the hour and the half hour. We always knew what time it was. I can still hear the warm and melodic chimes permeating the house.
My Grandparents house played a key role in my growing up. Every major event of my young life happened in their home. I remember celebrating my birthdays, religious events, school graduations and sports victories. And through it all the Grandfather Clock was there. It chimed accurately and melodically. It was as much a part of my family as the rest of us.
I recently visited an antique shop that carried many different types of Clocks. I immediately recalled my grandparents grandfather clock and decided that I should get one for my family. There are currently many models available. There are inexpensive key wound models that quite affordable.
There are Cherry finished and Oak finished Grandfather Clocks. The expensive models played elaborate chimes, while the more inexpensive ones played simple melodic chimes hourly and on the half hour.
My Grandparents gave my father their Grandfather Clock as a family heirloom. My siblings and I were very happy about this. Now I am shopping for a Clock for my family and I am looking forward to continue the family tradition also.
