Memory loss is always associated with aging and the aged, so it does make one wonder: what could cause memory loss for someone in their twenties? Sure all twenty year-olds experience a short mental blank when required to remember names of people they just met or locker combinations or where they put their keys. And then, there are bigger blanks, and there are people who either quit their jobs or are fired because they can’t remember what they need to do on a day-to-day basis, or forgetting how to do certain things that they’ve done many times before. Alarming stuff for people in their twenties.

In recent years there have been more and more occurrences of twenty year olds having problems with their memory. A fifty year olds memory is only 60 percent as capable as a 20 year olds in remembering.

Aging definitely affects memory retention, because as the mind and body get older, the less brain cells are produced to retain certain types of information. This starts in our twenties and steadily continues as we grow older. Memory loss does not necessarily mean an onset of Alzheimer’s disease, although it could be symptoms of this disease manifesting early. Now, of course, this is not a rapid process, and not the reason why a twenty year-old may experience memory loss.

There are certain causes of memory loss that may be effecting those in their twenties such as stress, depression, anxiety, head injuries, and alcohol and drugs. Also a study in Japan showed that too much use of the computer causes memory loss. There hasn’t been enough research to find out if this is true but should be stated even though the information isn’t conclusive.

The obvious way to counter this is to cut down on the stress, and one way to start is to get decent exercise, which allows better oxygen flow to your brain. Aside from exercising your body, though, it’s important to exercise your brain, as well.

You can also keep your brain active by doing crossword puzzles, mazes, and word searches. Doing these activities keeps the brain healthy and active.
