If you are starting a new website, affordable web hosting is a service you cannot do without. When we say web hosting, we are referring to the companies which provide space on their servers, bandwidth and networking equipment which enables your site to be on the web. Without a web host for your site, it doesn’t matter how much work you put into it; no one is going to see it unless it is online.

You have a lot of different options when it comes to web hosting. There are a lot of different companies out there and each of them offers different packages at different prices. You should think carefully about what you need from your website before you start looking around.

Think about the features you website will need. You may want to host large files or offer streaming media, which means you’ll need a lot of disk space and a lot of bandwidth. Maybe you need ecommerce capabilities or scripting on your site. Write these needs down so that you have a checklist of what you’re looking for as you examine the different web hosting packages out there.

While there are many free web hosting services out there, these are not ideal for a business website. You will find that in general, these free web hosting providers don’t offer as many features as the traditional hosting companies and also tend to have a low limit for bandwidth. Free web hosting is OK for small personal websites or for trying out different web hosting features, but using free web hosting for your business gives an unprofessional impression; it’s worth the cost to get regular web hosting for your website in most cases.

The next consideration is shared versus dedicated web hosting. Shared hosting is just what it sounds like – your website will be sharing space on one of the web hosting companies‘ services with many other websites.

For a business website, this can be problematic.

For instance, if a site sharing the website with yours is using too much of the server’s resources, this can slow down your site’s performance – not ideal for a business website. It is a better idea to go for dedicated hosting instead.

One of the most important things to think about here is the level of technical support and customer service offered. Your website will only be as strong as the capabilities of the support staff behind it. Look into the reputation of the company in regards to these factors – if possible, speak with some current customers to see what they think of the support and service offered by the company.

There are other considerations which should go into your choice of web hosting; uptime, the operating system used on the server (Windows vs. Linux) and others. However, the tips given here should get you started thinking about your needs for a web hosting company and get you on your way to finding a web hosting company which is right for you.
